Trauma Performance Improvement (PI) Nurse RN
Job SummaryThe Trauma Performance Improvement (PI) Nurse is a clinical resource in a multidisciplinary capacity throughout the continuum of care for adult and pediatric injured patients. The PI Nurse performs registrar, data collection, data analysis, and performance improvement activities for the injured patient and is responsible for the verification criterion as required by the American College of Surgeons. The Trauma PI Nurse works primarily as a clinical resource for staff nurses and physicians, facilitates problem solving for plan of care during Trauma Division rounds and collects and analyzes data specific to performance improvement projects and quality and safety initiatives. The Trauma PI Nurse initiates/participates in staff education, assesses learning needs of staff specific to trauma education, and acts as a mentor to less experienced staff. They demonstrate leadership skills by applying knowledge, experience, and judgment to determine the importance of a situation, set priorities, and use abstract thought to evaluate situations as they pertain to the injured patient and the American College of Surgeons requirements for trauma verification. Demonstrates accountability for practice as defined by the Nurse Practice Act. The Trauma PI Nurse maintains data in a trauma registry, enters patient data into a trauma registry, extracts data from the trauma registry to support approved research, reports data as required by governmental and regulatory agencies, manages data and analytics for internal quality assurance and improvement initiatives, as well as research. The PI RN maintains the alignment of orientation materials for staff with specific program and hospital requirements, coordinates, manages, gathers, compiles, verifies, and submits all information for the verification process with the American College of Surgeons. In addition, fulfills all requests for data compilation analysis, and verification from manager and physicians, and other duties as requested by the Trauma Program Manager/Director. This position is responsible for applying their extensive knowledge of continuous process improvement practices, methodologies, project management and change management to develop, coordinate and execute projects and initiatives toward the achievement of organizational goals. They are a technical leader with a high degree of knowledge in the overall field with expertise in specific areas; problem solving frequently requiring analysis of unique issues/problems without precedence and/or structure. May manage programs and projects that include formulating strategies and administering policies, processes, and resources, functioning with a high degree of autonomy. The Trauma PI Nurse works closely with the Trauma Program Manager/Director to lead performance improvement activities to ensure optimal patient outcomes and early identification of patient safety system issues.Apply By Date: February 6th, 2026, at 11:59 PM PTMinimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position
- Possession of active California RN license
- American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS), or UC Davis Health CPR
- Graduation from an accredited school of nursing
- Five (5) years of recent clinical experience in a primary Trauma unit, PACU working with trauma patients, or Emergency Department
- Experience with navigating the electronic medical record in the EPIC platform
- Demonstrated ability in assessment, planning, implementing, and evaluating patient care, taking into consideration protective interventions, development (behavioral and physical) and physiological characteristics specific to the patients
- Ability to read, write, speak, and understand the English language
- Ability to utilize medical terminology appropriately

- Advanced Trauma Care for Nurses (ATCN) or Trauma Nursing Care Course (TNCC) Certification
- BSN, MSN or other Administrative Master’s Degree
- Experience in multiple environments: ED, Acute Care, ICU, Prehospital
- Experience in Trauma Performance Improvement or Quality Improvement projects or roles
- Extensive database data entry and/or management experience
- In-depth knowledge of Joint Commission or Accreditation for Healthcare Organization Standards and other regulatory agencies
- In-depth knowledge of American College of Surgeons verification process and criteria
- Advanced ability to perform data analysis of outcomes to identify trends and/or opportunities for improvement
