About The Family and Social Services Administration: FSSA was established by the Indiana General Assembly in 1991 to consolidate and better integrate the delivery of human services by state government. FSSA is a health care and social services funding agency. Ninety-four percent of the agency’s total budget is paid to thousands of service providers ranging from major medical centers to a physical therapist working with a child or adult with a developmental disability. The seven care divisions in FSSA administer services to more than 1.5 million Hoosiers. FSSA’s mission is to compassionately serve Hoosiers of all ages and connect them with social services, health care and their communities. The Division of Mental Health and Addiction supports Indiana’s network of mental health care providers. We operate six hospitals and fund addiction and prevention programs. Role Overview: The Public Health Nurse Consultant functions as the subject matter expert in primary medical care within the DMHA Quality Improvement Team, specifically concentrating on private mental health institutions (PMHIs). This role entails conducting on-site assessments of hospitals that are licensed or certified by DMHA to deliver mental health and/or addiction services, with an emphasis on medical services, integration of primary healthcare, medication administration and monitoring, and inpatient care. The position demands a significant degree of independent decision-making regarding consumer care and involves leading assigned quality reviews. Candidates must possess a valid Registered Nurse license. This position is 100% remote however, it requires at least 50% travel. Salary Statement: The salary for this position traditionally starts at $59,800.00 but may be commensurate with education or work experience. A Day in the Life: The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • Coordinate community health care programs which may involve working with health departments, schools, clinics, public and private childcare facilities, abused or neglected children, home health agencies and rural health care services to improve quality of services.
  • Work with community physicians and health care professionals to establish improved reporting and communication between the medical provider community and the state agency staff.
  • Coordinate other programs such as school health, migrant health, health promotion and disease prevention programs for children and adults.
  • Work in collaboration with other health and social service providers to facilitate the delivery of health and development services.
  • Review medical records and provides professional medical opinions and recommendations.
  • Visit patients to assess the medical needs, monitor for signs of distress and develop recommendations on how to address any identified needs or concerns.
  • Follow up on clients and patients to ensure recommendations are followed and medical needs are addressed.
  • Act as a liaison between state agency and community partners to facilitate communication/ collaboration and ensure health and medical needs are being addressed.
  • Assist in developing diagnostic and treatment plans for clients/patients.
  • May provide consultation on communicable disease control and screenings.
  • Arrange and conduct in-service and/or continuing education programs.
  • Analyze and report on relevant health data. Exempt employees may work more than 75 hours in a pay period without additional compensation and must report a minimum of 75 hours per pay period of work hours and/or paid leave taken to receive their base biweekly salary. What You'll Need for Success: Registered Nurse (RN) license, active within the state of Indiana. Additionally, the ideal candidate in this role should minimally have either
  • a Bachelor’s Degree with 1+ years of experience, or
  • an Associate’s Degree with 3+ years of experience applying the below, outlined knowledge, skills, and abilities in a similar role. Related certifications and coursework may be considered for education or experience.
  • Extensive knowledge of nursing practices and consultant role in a specialized program area.
