🎯 The Role

As a Backend & Integration Engineer, you will work at the intersection of AI, backend systems, and enterprise integration, enabling intelligent agents and platforms to interact with real-world business systems in a reliable, scalable way.

You will collaborate in a highly cross-functional, international environment, working closely with AI and Data Engineers to deliver end‑to‑end solutions that transform complex system landscapes into actionable capabilities.

📍 Job location: Portugal (Remote, with occasional on-site workshops in Essen, Barcelona, or Swindon)🕒 Contract type: Permanent🗓 Target start date: ASAP⏰ Working hours: Full-time (40h/week)💵 Compensation: €42,000 – €55,000 gross per year

💥 Your Impact

In this role, you will:

  • Design and implement scalable integrations (APIs, services, MCP interfaces) that expose internal and external systems as reusable skills for AI agents

  • Collaborate on the development and optimisation of the execution layer, ensuring reliable, secure, and scalable agent-driven actions

  • Integrate the AI platform with business systems such as GIS data sources, valuation tools, and other enterprise applications

  • Build and maintain clean, well-documented APIs and backend services supporting modular and reusable architectures

  • Ensure integrations are robust, observable, and performant, with appropriate monitoring and error handling

  • Work closely with AI and Data Engineers within a shared backlog, contributing to full end-to-end delivery rather than isolated components

👤 What We’re Looking For

Must-haves

  • Strong experience with backend development and system integration, building robust and scalable services

  • Proven hands-on experience with Azure environments, including integration with Databricks

  • Solid background in API and backend development, including:

    • RESTful APIs

    • Event-driven architectures

  • Strong Python programming skills for building services, integrations, and automation

  • Experience integrating enterprise systems using internal and external APIs

  • Good understanding of distributed systems fundamentals, including:

    • Asynchronous processing

    • Queues and messaging

    • Scalable architectures

  • Familiarity with DevOps principles and Infrastructure as Code, including Terraform

  • Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to debug and resolve system and integration issues efficiently

  • Ability to communicate clearly with technical and non-technical stakeholders

  • Fluency in English

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with MCP or similar tool/skill exposure frameworks for AI or automation platforms

  • Deeper exposure to event-driven architectures and integration patterns

  • Experience working in data-heavy or AI-driven environments

  • Background in energy, utilities, or industrial systems

  • Bottom of the rangeYou meet the core requirements and will need ramp-up time and support.

  • Middle of the rangeYou are fully autonomous from Day 1 and deliver consistently.

  • Top of the rangeYou are a reference for the role, mentor others, and raise the bar for the team.

Final offers are based on experience, autonomy, scope, and market context, and are discussed transparently during the process.
