Job Description

The Salata Institute for Climate and Sustainability at Harvard develops and promotes durable, effective, and equitable solutions to the climate change challenges confronting humanity. The Institute pursues its mission by strengthening the Harvard-wide community of scholars, students, staff, alumni, and practitioners working toward climate solutions by providing a home for research, teaching, and engagement in climate and the environment. With the Institute’s support, Harvard scholars tackle the climate challenge in their classrooms and their laboratories. The institute also leverages Harvard’s convening power to engage and influence government, business, civil society, and communities in ways that lead to a sustainable future. The Salata Institute seeks a dedicated professional with knowledge of climate change issues or sustainability broadly to strengthen ties between the Institute and students who are interested in climate and sustainability. The position achieves this objective by interfacing with individual students and student organizations throughout Harvard University, administering cocurricular programs, and conceiving of and organizing cocurricular and career advancement activities and events. The Program Manager also plays a central role in the University-wide effort to organize the annual Salata Institute Climate and Sustainability Career Expo. The strongest candidates will be creative, resourceful, and enthusiastic about working with and providing services to students, and they will have strong critical thinking, administrative, and communication skills. The ability and willingness to work a few evenings per year are also necessary. The Program Manager will also contribute to the development of efficient work processes and cultivate a mission-driven organizational culture of collaboration, creativity, respect, diversity, and belonging. It is essential that the person in this position has a strong work ethic, be flexible and adaptive to change, and demonstrate professionalism and enthusiasm for the Salata Institute’s mission.

  • *Responsibilities**

The Program Manager will be responsible for the following.

  • Promotion and Relationship Building
  • Promote the Salata Institute and disseminate information about its activities and programs to students by organizing open houses and tabling events, making presentations, and engaging with the Undergraduate Houses, climate and sustainability student organizations, and student government leaders.
  • Initiate and manage educational activities and events for students, including developing content, structure, and publicity, coordinating with Harvard University offices and groups, and managing logistics.

Address student information and funding requests.

  • *Program Management**

• Administer a set of programs that provide funding to individual students and to student organizations for enrichment experiences, including on- and off-campus research, events, projects, travel to the annual Conference of Parties and other convenings, and internships.

  • Liaise with other Harvard University offices in coordinating joint activities and programs, such as student pre-matriculation and orientation events.
  • Play a central role in the University-wide effort to organize the annual Salata Institute Climate & Sustainability Career Expo.
  • Produce and analyze reports to evaluate activities and programs; recommend improvements based on this analysis.
  • Write program descriptions, web content, applications, presentations, and reports.
  • Ensure compliance with University policies and procedures and applicable legal rules and regulations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
