Position Overview

The Senior Big Data Software Engineer will play a pivotal role in designing, developing, and maintaining our enterprise-level data platforms and processing systems. This position requires a strong technical foundation in big data technologies, cloud infrastructure, and software engineering best practices. The ideal candidate will thrive in a collaborative environment, demonstrate leadership capabilities, and possess a passion for solving complex technical challenges.

Working closely with cross-functional teams, you will be responsible for building scalable data solutions that enable meaningful business insights and drive operational efficiency across the organization.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and execute complex data engineering initiatives within specialized technical environments, ensuring alignment with business objectives and quality standards.
  • Design and implement large-scale data architecture solutions, including data pipelines, ETL processes, and integration frameworks that support critical business functions.
  • Develop, test, and maintain code for projects and initiatives related to the technology domain, including system upgrades, deployments, and enhancements.
  • Analyze and resolve complex technical challenges that require in-depth assessment of technologies, systems, and enterprise requirements.
  • Troubleshoot and debug data processing issues, performance bottlenecks, and system integrations while ensuring optimal functionality.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders across departments, including product managers, business analysts, and operations teams, to translate business requirements into technical solutions.
  • Mentor and guide junior team members, providing technical direction, code reviews, and knowledge transfer to build team capabilities.
  • Participate in architecture design sessions and contribute to technical roadmap planning for data platform evolution.
  • Ensure compliance with organizational policies, security standards, and regulatory requirements throughout the development lifecycle.
  • Document technical specifications, design documents, and process workflows to maintain clear knowledge repositories.

Essential Qualifications

Technical Experience

  • 3+ years of professional software engineering experience, demonstrating proficiency in software design, development, and deployment.
  • 3+ years of hands-on experience with Apache Hadoop ecosystem technologies, including HDFS, MapReduce, YARN, and related components.
  • 3+ years of experience with Teradata database systems, including SQL development, performance tuning, and data modeling.
  • 3+ years of experience with MongoDB and NoSQL database design, including schema design, replication, and sharding strategies.
  • 3+ years of experience with Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud platform, including EC2, S3, EMR, Lambda, and other relevant services.
  • 3+ years of experience with version control systems, particularly GitHub and Bitbucket, including branching strategies and collaborative workflows.
  • 3+ years of experience in the complete software development lifecycle, from requirements gathering through design, coding, testing, troubleshooting, and production deployment.
  • Proficiency in multiple programming languages, including Python, Scala, and Unix/Shell scripting for automation and data processing.
  • Experience with additional big data technologies, including HBase, Oozie, Flume, Apache Kafka for real-time data streaming and processing.
  • Experience with configuration management tools, particularly Ansible, for infrastructure automation and deployment.

Educational Background

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related technical field. Equivalent professional experience will be considered in lieu of formal education.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong communication skills (verbal and written) with the ability to articulate technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences across all organizational levels.
  • Proven ability to work in a highly collaborative environment and demonstrate a proactive approach to problem-solving and team success.
  • Experience designing and implementing ETL data streams using workflows and mappings to extract data from SQL Server and handle data transformation from Oracle/Access/Excel using SQL Server SSIS.
  • Experience in the financial services industry, particularly in roles involving data engineering, risk management, or regulatory reporting.
  • Knowledge of Agile methodologies and experience working in Scrum-based development teams.
  • Familiarity with data governance practices and understanding of data quality standards.
  • Experience with real-time streaming data processing using Apache Kafka, Apache Flink, or similar technologies.
  • Understanding of containerization technologies such as Docker and orchestration platforms like Kubernetes.
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines using Jenkins, GitLab CI, or similar tools.
