At the heart of this mission lies a sophisticated, highly scalable data infrastructure that powers recommendation engines, content delivery, analytics, and a host of internal tools. As a Senior Distributed Systems Engineer – Data Platform (L4), you will join a passionate team of engineers who design, build, and operate the data foundations that enable arenaflex to serve billions of requests per day with sub‑millisecond latency.

Why This Role Is a Game‑Changer

Imagine shaping the data backbone of a company that reaches half a billion users worldwide. In this role you will:

  • Architect and evolve distributed data platforms that handle petabyte‑scale workloads.
  • Collaborate with product managers, TPMs, and cross‑functional engineers to translate business goals into robust technical solutions.
  • Contribute to open‑source projects, sharing arenaflex’s innovations with the broader community.
  • Drive performance optimizations that directly impact user experience, from content discovery to playback quality.

Key Responsibilities

Core Engineering & Platform Development

  • Design, implement, and maintain highly available, low‑latency data services that support arenaflex’s micro‑service ecosystem.
  • Build and enhance data access layers, query gateways, and storage abstractions that enable sub‑millisecond response times.
  • Develop and own critical components of the Data Platform, including the Database Access Layer, Data Platform Foundation, and Large Data Engine.
  • Write production‑grade code in Java, Python, or other JVM‑based languages, adhering to arenaflex’s standards for reliability, security, and performance.

Scalability & Performance Engineering

  • Identify and resolve bottlenecks in data pipelines, query execution, and storage systems.
  • Implement performance testing frameworks and conduct rigorous benchmarking at scale.
  • Collaborate with the Open‑Source Community to integrate emerging technologies such as Presto/Trino, Druid, Apache Iceberg, and Flink.
  • Design fault‑tolerant architectures that gracefully handle node failures, network partitions, and data corruption scenarios.

Collaboration & Leadership

  • Partner with product owners to define data‑driven features and prioritize roadmap items.
  • Mentor junior engineers, fostering a culture of continuous learning and knowledge sharing.
  • Lead design reviews, code reviews, and post‑mortem analyses to drive engineering excellence.
  • Represent arenaflex at industry conferences and contribute to internal tech talks.

Essential Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Experience: Minimum 2 years of hands‑on experience building large‑scale distributed systems or data platform components.
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in Java or other object‑oriented languages; strong grasp of data structures, algorithms, and concurrency.
  • Distributed Systems Knowledge: Demonstrated ability to design and implement fault‑tolerant, horizontally scalable services.
  • Data Platform Exposure: Experience with modern data processing frameworks (e.g., Flink, Spark), query engines (Presto/Trino, Druid), and storage technologies (Iceberg, Parquet).
  • Problem‑Solving Ability: Comfortable tackling ambiguous, high‑impact problems with a systematic, data‑driven approach.

Preferred Qualifications & Additional Skills

  • Advanced degree (M.S. or Ph.D.) in Computer Science or a related discipline.
  • Hands‑on experience with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure) and container orchestration (Kubernetes).
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure‑as‑code (Terraform, CloudFormation), and monitoring tools (Prometheus, Grafana).
  • Contributions to open‑source projects, especially in the data infrastructure space.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex technical concepts to non‑technical stakeholders.

Core Competencies for Success

  • Analytical Mindset: Ability to dissect large data sets, identify patterns, and drive actionable insights.
  • Collaboration: Proven track record of working effectively in cross‑functional, remote teams.
  • Ownership: Takes full responsibility for the end‑to‑end lifecycle of services, from design through production support.
  • Adaptability: Thrives in a fast‑moving environment where priorities shift based on business needs.
  • Innovation: Eager to experiment with emerging technologies and push the boundaries of what’s possible at scale.

Career Growth & Learning Opportunities

arenaflex invests heavily in the professional development of its engineers. As a Senior Distributed Systems Engineer, you will have access to:

  • Mentorship programs pairing you with senior architects and industry veterans.
  • Annual technology conferences, workshops, and tuition reimbursement for relevant certifications.
  • Opportunities to lead high‑visibility projects that directly influence arenaflex’s global product strategy.
  • Rotational assignments across different data platform teams, broadening your expertise in storage, streaming, and analytics.
