Position Overview – Part‑Time Remote Data Engineer

arenaflex is seeking a highly motivated, technically proficient Data Engineer to join our dynamic analytics team on a part‑time, remote basis. In this role, you will design, build, and maintain robust data pipelines that enable critical business insights across operations, customer acquisition, and product development. You will work closely with cross‑functional stakeholders—including product managers, data scientists, and engineering leads—to translate complex business requirements into scalable, reliable data solutions.

This position offers the flexibility to work from anywhere while contributing to high‑impact projects that directly influence arenaflex’s strategic decisions. If you thrive in fast‑paced environments, enjoy solving intricate data challenges, and are passionate about leveraging cloud technologies to drive business value, we want to hear from you.

Key Responsibilities

  • Data Pipeline Development: Design, implement, and maintain end‑to‑end ETL processes using AWS services (e.g., Glue, Lambda, Redshift) and SQL technologies to ingest, transform, and load large, complex data sets from diverse sources.
  • Data Lake Architecture: Build and optimize data lake infrastructure that supports high‑volume, high‑velocity data ingestion while ensuring data quality, security, and compliance.
  • Scalable Solutions: Identify, design, and execute internal process improvements, including infrastructure redesign for greater scalability and automation of manual workflows.
  • Analytics Enablement: Develop analytical tools and dashboards that surface actionable insights on operational performance, customer acquisition, and revenue metrics.
  • Stakeholder Collaboration: Partner with product, design, engineering, and executive teams to understand data requirements, troubleshoot technical issues, and deliver tailored data solutions.
  • Vendor Management: Coordinate with external vendors to integrate third‑party data sources and ensure delivery of high‑quality, reliable data services.
  • Quality Assurance: Implement unit testing, code quality checks, CI/CD pipelines, and security best practices to maintain a robust and reliable data engineering environment.
  • Documentation & Training: Produce clear documentation of data models, pipelines, and processes; mentor junior team members and share knowledge across the organization.
  • Ad‑hoc Projects: Support additional process responsibilities as directed by leadership, contributing to broader initiatives that enhance arenaflex’s operational excellence.

Essential Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, Data Science, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience).
  • 3+ years of professional experience designing and operating cloud‑based data infrastructure, preferably on AWS.
  • Proven expertise in building ETL pipelines, data lakes, and data warehouses using technologies such as AWS Glue, Redshift, S3, and SQL.
  • Hands‑on experience with a variety of file formats (Delimited Text, Fixed Width, XML, JSON, Parquet) and data serialization techniques.
  • Strong knowledge of messaging and integration services (e.g., AWS Service Bus, Kafka, or similar) for data ingestion and egress.
  • Solid understanding of CI/CD tools, unit testing frameworks, code quality analysis, containerization (Docker, Kubernetes), and security best practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in Agile environments, participating in sprint planning, daily stand‑ups, retrospectives, and continuous improvement activities.
  • Excellent problem‑solving skills with a data‑driven mindset; ability to analyze complex issues, identify root causes, and propose effective solutions.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to convey technical concepts to non‑technical stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications & Additional Skills

  • Experience with additional cloud platforms (Azure, Google Cloud) and multi‑cloud strategies.
  • Familiarity with big‑data processing frameworks such as Apache Spark, Hadoop, or Flink.
  • Knowledge of data governance, data lineage, and compliance standards (e.g., GDPR, CCPA).
  • Background in the travel, hospitality, or airline industry, providing context for business‑specific data challenges.
  • Certification in AWS (e.g., AWS Certified Data Analytics – Specialty) or related cloud credentials.
  • Proficiency in Python, Scala, or Java for data transformation and pipeline orchestration.

Core Competencies & Personal Attributes

  • Analytical Thinking: Ability to dissect large data sets, recognize patterns, and derive meaningful insights that drive strategic decisions.
  • Innovation: A proactive attitude toward exploring new technologies and methodologies that can improve data processing efficiency.
  • Collaboration: Strong team player who thrives in cross‑functional environments and values diverse perspectives.
  • Adaptability: Comfortable navigating ambiguous requirements and shifting priorities in a fast‑moving industry.
  • Integrity & Accountability: Commitment to delivering high‑quality work, meeting deadlines, and taking ownership of outcomes.
