Remote Part-Time Data Engineer – Distributed Systems & Cloud Data Platforms | $27/Hour at arenaflex

Remote · USA Full-time New today

Join arenaflex: Build the Future of Distributed Data Engineering, Part-Time, Remotely

Are you a passionate data engineer seeking meaningful work without sacrificing work-life balance? arenaflex is reimagining part-time opportunities in technology by offering a flexible, remote data engineering position that pays $27 per hour and values your expertise as much as your time. This isn't a typical part-time gig — it's a chance to design, build, and ship high-performance distributed data processing systems that power real-world financial technology at scale.

At arenaflex, we believe that top-tier engineering talent shouldn't be confined to rigid full-time schedules. As part of our innovative and inclusive technology group, you'll collaborate with skilled engineers in an open, supportive environment where your voice is genuinely heard, your ideas matter, and you have the autonomy to choose the right tools for solving complex challenges. We invest in our engineers' growth, encourage contributions to the open-source community, and dedicate time for continuous professional development to keep your skills sharp and relevant.

About This Opportunity

This part-time role is ideal for engineers who want to stay hands-on with cutting-edge technology while maintaining flexibility for studies, family, personal projects, or other pursuits. You'll work approximately 8 hours per day as part of our engineering rotation, contributing to the architecture and implementation of card transaction systems deployed on hybrid cloud platforms. As a Data Engineer at arenaflex, you will play a pivotal role in designing and building the distributed data processing and analytics infrastructure that supports our mission-critical operations.

The position is remote-first, with coordination hubs in New York, USA, and beyond. Whether you're an experienced engineer looking to scale back from full-time, a parent returning to the workforce, a student pursuing advanced studies, or a consultant seeking a steady part-time engagement, arenaflex welcomes your unique perspective.

Key Responsibilities

  • Architect and Engineer Distributed Systems: Design, build, and maintain distributed data processing and analytics systems that operate reliably at scale, supporting hybrid cloud deployments.
  • Create High-Level and Detailed Designs: Develop both strategic architectural plans and detailed subsystem designs with a relentless focus on performant, maintainable code.
  • Develop Features Collaboratively: Build and code features side-by-side with peer engineers, contributing to daily standups, code reviews, and full Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) activities.
  • Validate Innovation Through Prototypes: Construct Proofs of Concept (POCs) to validate emerging ideas, evaluate new technologies, and test architectural hypotheses before production rollout.
  • Stay Ahead of Industry Trends: Continuously scout, evaluate, and learn industry-leading technologies, frameworks, and open-source projects to drive innovation in low-latency distributed system design.
  • Foster a Culture of Experimentation: Lead by example in embracing a fun, results-oriented culture where calculated risks and creative experimentation are encouraged — and where failure is treated as a learning opportunity.
  • Collaborate Across Borders: Partner with peer technology, product, and innovation teams spread across multiple geographies to deliver cohesive, integrated solutions.
  • Mentor and Guide Peers: Provide technical mentorship and architectural guidance to fellow engineers, elevating the collective capability of the team.
  • Communicate with Clarity: Create and deliver compelling technical presentations to senior leadership and stakeholders, translating complex engineering concepts into clear business value.

Essential Qualifications

  • Educational Background: A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, or a related technical field from an accredited institution.
  • Spark Expertise: Demonstrated hands-on experience in data processing using Apache Spark (or equivalent distributed processing frameworks).
  • NoSQL Database Proficiency: Solid knowledge in designing, implementing, and operating NoSQL databases such as Apache Cassandra, Elasticsearch, or comparable systems.
  • Programming Fundamentals: Deep understanding of design patterns, threading models, and memory models supported by your primary programming language and virtual machine environment.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to articulate technical decisions to both engineering peers and senior leadership.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Distributed Data Experience: Hands-on experience in distributed data processing and analytics using Cassandra, Elasticsearch, and Spark in production environments.
  • Messaging Systems: Familiarity with distributed messaging systems such as Apache Kafka, RabbitMQ, or similar event-streaming platforms.
  • Microservices Architecture: Experience building microservices and service mesh architectures is a strong plus.
  • Cloud and Containerization: Working knowledge of containerization and orchestration platforms such as Docker, Kubernetes, and OpenShift.
  • DevOps Practices: Experience with Continuous Integration (CI), Continuous Delivery (CD), and modern DevOps tooling and pipelines.
  • Large-Scale Architecture: Proven ability to architect large-scale distributed data systems with careful consideration of scalability, reliability, security, performance, and extensibility.
  • Open-Source Engagement: A genuine enthusiasm for contributing to or staying engaged with the open-source ecosystem.

Skills and Competencies for Success

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving mindset with attention to detail.
  • Self-motivated and capable of thriving in a remote, asynchronous work environment.
  • Collaborative spirit with the ability to give and receive constructive feedback gracefully.
  • Curiosity-driven approach to learning new technologies and adopting best practices.
  • Time management skills that allow you to deliver high-impact work within a part-time schedule.
  • Adaptability to evolving project priorities, technologies, and team structures.

  • Health and Wellness Benefits: Depending on hours worked and location, eligibility for health, dental, and vision coverage, plus wellness program access.
  • Paid Time Off: Pro-rated paid vacation, sick leave, and holidays aligned with your part-time schedule.
  • Retirement Contributions: Eligibility for retirement savings plans with company matching contributions where applicable.
  • Mentorship and Community: Access to senior engineers, peer learning circles, and an active engineering guild.
