The North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services is seeking an IT System Administrator to join its Office of Information Technology. The role involves maintaining and enhancing Alaska’s enterprise server management systems, focusing on server patching, automation, and troubleshooting.

Responsibilities

  • Verifying servers performed expected tasks during the maintenance windows
  • Checking enterprise systems to proactively catch issues before they propagate, primarily related to patching server operating systems and the underlying hardware
  • Investigating operational or security issues
  • Creating scripts and automation to fine-tune processes implemented through the enterprise server management systems
  • Providing insight and guidance for the team to focus on problem areas

Skills

  • Any combination of education and/or experience that provides the applicant with competencies in Hardware: Knowledge of specifications, uses, and types of computer or computer-related equipment
  • Any combination of education and/or experience that provides the applicant with competencies in Infrastructure Design: Knowledge of the architecture and typology of software, hardware, and networks, including LANS, WANS, and telecommunications systems, their components and associated protocols and standards, and how they operate and integrate with one another and with associated controlling software
  • Any combination of education and/or experience that provides the applicant with competencies in Operating Systems: Knowledge of computer network, desktop, and mainframe operating systems and their applications
  • Any combination of education and/or experience that provides the applicant with competencies in Systems Integration: Knowledge of the principles, methods, and procedures for installing, integrating, and optimizing information systems components
  • Any combination of education and/or experience that provides the applicant with competencies in Systems Testing and Evaluation: Knowledge of principles, methods, and tools for analyzing and developing systems testing and evaluation procedures and technical characteristics of IT systems, including identifying critical operational issues
  • Training in computer science, information technology, or system administration – or a similar field or professional experience – that provided knowledge of systems, networking software, hardware, protocols, and scripting/automation tools

  • Please be aware – this position requires the use of the Alaska Public Safety Information Network (APSIN). A security clearance issued by the Department of Public Safety (DPS) is necessary to use APSIN. DPS will deny security clearance for any applicant who has been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor in this state or another jurisdiction, or who may be a fugitive from justice. Additionally, security clearance will be withdrawn if DPS discovers that material information was falsified or omitted at the time of the initial application for security clearance
  • Knowledge of the principles, methods, and tools for designing, developing, and testing computer or computer-related equipment
  • Knowledge of the principles, methods, and techniques of information technology (IT) assessment, planning, management, monitoring, and evaluation, such as IT baseline assessment, interagency functional analysis, contingency planning, and disaster recovery
  • Writes in a clear, concise, organized, and convincing manner for the intended audience
