JOB DESCRIPTION Job Title: Language Arts Teacher, YES Department: Youth Empowerment Services (YES) Reports To: Program Manager Supervises: None FLSA Status: Exempt Pay Grade: E3 Job Type: Full-Time, Regular (43 weeks) AKBCU: No ICPA: Yes General Functions: The Language Arts Teacher will work with Alaska Native/ American Indian students in various settings, both in and out of the classroom. This position will provide one-on-one as well as group instruction and will be expected to participate in special events and extra-curricular activities. The Language Arts Teacher is responsible for developing and implementing innovative, challenging, engaging, and culturally relevant material. Duties and Responsibilities: Work collaboratively within a three-to-five-person Cook Inlet Tribal Council (CITC) Educational Team including the Program Manager, Youth advocate, and Teachers. Provide instruction in core subjects such as reading and writing (teacher will focus core instruction in the area of their certification) as well as career and cultural enrichment to Alaska Native/American Indian students. Use appropriate instructional techniques congruent with Native learning styles. Develop positive working relationships with students and families; encourage family involvement in the educational process of each student. In collaboration with the CITC youth advocate, develop individual student files to include demographics, attendance, in-class participation, and other educational data. With the assistance of the CITC education team, develop individual education plans for each student based on Anchorage School District (ASD) and CITC administered assessments. Support students in the use of a variety of CITC and Anchorage School District special programs, online classes, and computer-based educational programs. In collaboration with the CITC youth advocate, plan and participate in group cultural activities and special events/field trips scheduled throughout the academic year. Coordinate with CITC team members concerning in-school parent conferences; call for and conduct parent meetings as deemed necessary. Participate in CITC staff development training and attend applicable ASD in-service seminars and workshops. Follow ASD policies, especially regarding submitting grades, attendance, etc. Teachers are CITC employees as well as guests in the schools and all relationships must be respected. Maintains participant confidentiality according to regulations. Performs all related duties as needed and assigned. Job Specifications: Excellent interpersonal skills combined with the demonstrated ability to work with diverse groups of people with varying needs. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as a contributory team member. Strong problem-solving skills. Demonstrated ability to work productively with a minimum amount of supervision. Demonstrated ability to think logically, methodically, accurately as well as creatively. Proficient computer skills, including spreadsheet, word processing, and publishing programs. Familiarity with Anchorage School District (ASD) curricula and be willing to design alternative, innovative, and culturally responsive teaching methods. Minimum Core Competencies: CITC Values, Respectful Leadership, Professionalism, Emotional Intelligence, Problem-Solving/Critical Thinking, Communication Skills Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in Education, Language Arts, or related field. Current Alaska Teaching Certificate with High School Language Arts endorsement. Three (3) years of experience working professionally with youth, or an equivalent combination of education and life experience. Experience working with Alaska Native people, knowledge of their values and belief systems, and ability to provide culturally competent services. Continued employment status will be contingent upon satisfactory completion of a state and federal criminal background check. Preferred Qualifications: Experience with innovative and culturally responsive teaching methods. Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the social, educational, training, and cultural needs of the Alaska Native/American Indian community. Valid Alaska driver?s license and insurable under CITC?s automotive insurance, which requires a driver to be at least 21 years of age and have had a driver?s license for at least three years. NATIVE PREFERENCE STATEMENT: Pursuant to the Indian Self-Determination and Education Assistance Act of 1975 (PL 93-638) and as further guided by CITC's Native Preference Policy 6.120, CITC maintains preference in all phases of employment for Alaska Native, American Indian (AN/AI) and Native Hawaiian people, including direct lineal descendants and foster or traditionally adopted children. Also included are non-Native head of household members for Native families, which includes foster or traditionally adopted Native children.
